Technical Chair: Louis L. Cseko, Jr., American Friction Technologies

Speaker: Dr. Matthew L. Becker,
Professor of Polymer Science and Biomedical Engineering of the
University of Akron and Director of the Akron Functional Materials Center

Additionally, from 2003 to 2009, Dr Becker was a NRC postdoctoral fellow and then Project Leader in the Polymers Division at NIST. He received his PhD in Organic Chemistry in 2003 from Washington University in St. Louis on an NIH Chemistry-Biology Interface predoctoral training fellowship under the direction of Professor Karen L. Wooley. His multi-disciplinary research group focuses on synthesizing macromolecular materials for molecular sensing and regenerative medicine applications.

Dr. Becker and his research project were featured in the Akron Beacon Journal, front cover, on Monday, October 12, 2015, regarding his biodegradable cylinders for orthopedic medicine.

Topic: Poly(ester urea)s for Regenerative Medicine

Recent synthetic advances have enabled the synthesis of polymers designed to elicit specific cellular functions and to direct cell-cell interactions. Further advances in both synthetic methodology and scaffold fabrication are needed to drive these efforts forward. Other significant limitations to bringing new materials to the clinic include the facts that fully synthetic materials lack cell specific receptors and have poorly defined serum adsorption properties, which can vary widely depending on the amount and nature of the adsorbed layer. Many potential solutions including doping with proteins or peptides or decorating the polymer with covalently tethered peptides that mimic the extracellular matrix or growth factors have been employed over the years. While these approached have been demonstrated to aid the biochemical signaling and integration into host tissues, they generally reduce the mechanical properties of the material. This presentation will describe the use of functionalized poly(ester urea) materials in nanofiber, scaffold and hydrogel technologies.
