Avon Lake, OH. www.rpplusm.com
Edward Herderick, Director of Research at rp+m (rapid prototyping plus manufacturing.)
Presentation: 3D printing was developed more than 30 years ago as a way to produce prototype parts to serve as models in the product development process. It wasn't until 1995 that the first metals based process was developed and the term additive manufacturing began to be adopted. The early technologies were not intended to produce production and the functional design was not much of a consideration. As new technologies for polymers and ultimately for metals and other materials are developed material properties have come into increased focus.

rp+m was launched to serve as a rapid prototype arm of a 62-year old injection molding company, enabling the company to demonstrate capabilities and win business. With the increased demand for production material development, rp+m has become an important component of the supply chain in developing additive manufacturing capacity for the aerospace industry and other industries in northeast Ohio. The story of material development for additive manufacturing and manufacturing renaissance will be told through the experiences of rp+m - looking at the past, present and future.
