Speaker: Dr. B. Lynn Ferguson, President, DANTE Solutions, Inc., Cleveland Ohio

Topic: "Using Computer Modeling to Solve Production Heat Treat Problems"

Real Problems can be solved by judicious application of accurate heat treating models and the cost and time for computer modeling can be a good return on the investment. Three cases will be presented to prove this point that resulted in cost savings through product reclamation, process improvements, and avoidance of large-scale warranty issues.

Case One: Reclamation of parts that failed to meet deep case carburization specifications.

Case Two: Commercial airplane landing gear where dimensional control during quenching was critical and the avoidance of unwanted bainite in thicker sections was important.

Case Three: Induction hardening of a shaft. The investigation and solution into internal cracks that had led to torsional fatigue issues in the shaft.

Speaker: Dr. B. Lynn Ferguson is President of DANTE Solutions Inc., formerly known as Deformation Control Technology, Inc., a company founded in 1982. This company provides comprehensive thermal, mechanical and metallurgical services to the metalworking industry. Dr. Ferguson is a graduate of Drexel University (BS in Metallurgical Engineering, MS & PhD in Materials Engineering). For the past 20 years he has focused on computer simulation and metallurgical events that take place during the heat treatment of steel parts. He is a Fellow of ASMI, Alpha Sigma Mu and IFHTSE.
