He currently volunteers as a MAPS Air Museum historian, aircraft restorer, and tour guide. He was the first editor of the MAPS Briefing and served on the MAPS Board of Directors for 15 years.

Tour: The MAPS Air Museum, 2260 International Parkway, North Canton, Ohio 44720 (330) 896-6332.

This is the Akron ASM International “end-of season” family and social event. We will have a light deli meal followed by a presentation by Dr. Rick Johnston. The museum will be open for self-guided tours with several of the MAPS Museum Volunteers being available to answer questions. The MAPS Museum is definitely a diamond in the rough for our area. Those who have already visited it are always willing to return as there are aircraft that was missed or not there during the last visit. Those of you who haven’t ever been there, you are in for a treat. Bring spouses, children, and grandchildren. They will also be thrilled seeing the aircraft and displays. Check out the web site.

Presentation Topic: The Evolution of Aircraft Structural Materials: From the Wright Flyer to the Dreamliner by Rick Johnston, MAPS Air Museum

Aircraft structural materials have evolved from the wood and fabric of the Wright Flyer to the high-tech composites and alloys used today in aircraft such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the F-22 Raptor. These uses demand high strength and toughness with the lowest possible weight. This presentation will examine the evolution of aircraft materials from early wood and fabric construction up to modern materials. It will also touch on some of the special materials which went into high performance aircraft such as the de Havilland Mosquito, SR-71 Blackbird, and the Space Shuttle.
