Topic: Ceramic Material Design in Fixed Bed Hydrocarbon Conversion Reactors.
The presentation will focus on the ceramic development and applications used by Saint-Gobain NorPro.
The continual mandate that oil refiners need to maintain or to increase production using heavier feedstocks to produce cleaner fuel yields has led to difficult refinery operations. This operation change has led to increased pressure drop in the catalytic and absorbent reactors and has caused shorter run times, higher operating costs, and decreased product quality. Engineering tailored ceramic materials can assist in reducing the system pressure drop and longer service life. Data will be presented from several commercial installations demonstrating this ceramic design strategy.
Speaker: Dr. Thomas Szymanski Director New Technologies, Saint-Gobain NorPro
Dr. Szymanski was born in Acushnet, Massachusetts and was educated in the Dartmouth, Massachusetts school system. He received his bachelor of science in Chemistry at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
He continued his education at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois where he earned his masters and doctorate degrees in Physical Bioinorganic Chemistry working with Professors Fred Basolo and Brian Hoffmann.
After graduating from Northwestern University, Dr. Szymanski was a research chemist at Exxons Research and Development Laboratories in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Dr. Szymanski then joined Saint-Gobain NorPros predecessor company, Norton Chemical Process Products, as a Senior Research Scientist. He is now the Director of New Technologies for Saint-Gobain NorPro.
Dr. Szymanski is the coauthor of ten published papers and has presented more than twenty papers at various technical society meetings.
