High energy density infrared (HDIR) fusion processes offer the ability to quickly apply claddings over large areas while minimally affecting substrate material. Variation of the application and fusion parameters results in the ability to tailor interfacial reactions and the heat affected zone. This presentation highlights a variety of coating systems developed through MesoCoat, Inc., including: nickel based alloys for oil and gas applications, aluminum alloys bonded to steel substrates for improved atmospheric corrosion resistance, thick WC-metal matrix composite coatings for wear resistance, and Fe-Cr-Al alloy coatings for high temperature corrosion resistance. Emphasis will be placed on the versatility of HDIR processing for a variety of coating chemistries.
Speaker: Dr. Joshua Caris, Metallurgical Design Engineer, MesoCoat, Inc.
Dr. Joshua Caris, Metallurgist, received his B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 2002, his M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering, specializing in active brazing of ceramics, from Case Western Reserve University in 2003, and his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Case Western Reserve University, specializing in heat treatment and mechanical properties of Cu-Ni-Sn alloys, in 2007. Joshua has 9 years of research and development experience in the refractory metals industries, accessories for iron casting industries, creep deformation of metals as well as active brazing of ceramics through Sandia National Labs, and a Post Doc focused on the mechanical properties and processing of amorphous metal compositions. He joined MesoCoat, Inc. as Metallurgist in April of 2010. He has since been PI on a DOE Phase II SBIR Project entitled Microcomposite Coatings for Advanced Heat Exchanger Applications
