ASM Akron Teachers Camp July 24, 2017 to July 28, 2017

At the 2017 Akron ASM Teachers Camp, held at the University of Akron, there were 22 teachers. Seven were repeat attendees and one from Tampa, FL. We sincerely thank our major sponsors, The University of Akron (Departments of Applied Science and Technology, Arts and Science, and Engineering), National Association of Corrosion Engineering (NACE), Foundry Industry Association (FIA), and ASM Foundation. There were 14 additional suppliers of equipment and consumables.

Tours were very well appreciated by teachers Wednesday pm at Akron Steel Treating and Thursday of the University of Akron. The Akron Steel Treating visit started with a presentation by Joe Powell and facility tours were lead by Joe Powell, Steve Powell, and Matt Moldvay. In the campus tour, teachers were introduced to the new facilities available to their students if they choose to attend UA.

Teachers experienced 5 days of materials science (metals, ceramics, polymers, composites, and corrosion) in the lecture room and hands-on laboratory experiments. Each day, they received materials to take back to their classrooms.

On Sunday morning prior to the camp ASM Akron members assisted in preparing the experiment supply bags. Dr. Robert Shemenski, FASM, Louis Cseko, Deborah Curtis, David Houser, Marion Gordon, Gene Homer and John Gordon.

This was the 10th ASM Materials Camp for Teachers organized by ASM Akron Chapter exposing 211 teachers to materials science. Dr. Robert Shemenski, FASM, Akron Chapter, has organized this event since it’s onset. We greatly appreciate his dedication to education. This was the 7th year for Master Teachers Margaret Showalter and the 3rd for Pat Duda.
